Having heart disease does not mean staying home.

The vast majority of cardiac patients can travel safely — including internationally, by air, to cruise destinations, and to moderate altitude. The minority who cannot, or who need physician clearance, are identifiable by specific condition and status. The difference between a safe trip and a dangerous one is almost always preparation, not cardiac diagnosis.

This guide provides the specific framework Dr. Nyange uses to assess travel readiness, prepare patients for different travel types, and equip them for what to do if a cardiac issue arises away from home.

HF Wait Time
Recommended stability period before flying in patients with recently decompensated heart failure

“Having heart disease does not mean stopping your life. My patients travel internationally, hike, take cruises, and visit family across the world. The ones who do it safely are the ones who prepare properly: medications in carry-on, a medical letter in their wallet, and a conversation with me before they leave.”

Common Questions

I had a heart attack 5 weeks ago. Can I fly to my daughter's wedding?
Timing matters significantly here. The recommendation for uncomplicated MI is a minimum 3-week wait before commercial flight. At 5 weeks post-uncomplicated MI, flying is generally appropriate with physician clearance. Complicated MI (shock, significant arrhythmia, reduced EF) requires a longer wait and individual assessment. The guide covers the complete post-MI flight timeline and what "clearance" involves.
I'm traveling to Cusco, Peru (11,200 feet). Is that safe with my heart condition?
Cusco is one of the most commonly encountered high-altitude destinations for travelers. At 11,200 feet, it is in the range that warrants discussion with Dr. Nyange before traveling with any significant cardiac condition. The guide covers which conditions are contraindicated at altitude (decompensated HF, severe pulmonary hypertension, severe valvular disease, unstable angina) and which can travel with gradual ascent planning and acclimatization strategies.
How do I handle my anticoagulant dosing across time zones?
For trips under one week, most practitioners recommend maintaining home time zone dosing rather than shifting. For longer trips, a gradual shift of 1-2 hours per day is generally preferred. Warfarin is most sensitive to timing changes and dietary shifts — discuss specifically with Dr. Nyange before any long trip. DOACs are somewhat more forgiving but still benefit from consistent timing. The guide covers the general framework; Dr. Nyange will individualize for your specific medication and travel duration.
